The Nainital guide

Nainital is an emerald lake folded into a ring of Kumaon ridges, with a Raj-era boating town wrapped around its shore — Mallital at one end, Tallital at the other, and the Mall running between them under a rim of viewpoints. It has been Delhi's monsoon-season crush since the 1840s and its shape hasn't changed: everything faces the water.
It is also the most timing-sensitive hill drive we run. In peak months the town bars incoming light vehicles through the evening, Mall Road parking is banned in season, and there is no fast charger anywhere at the top — three constraints we plan around before the car leaves Delhi, which is why the early start matters more here than anywhere.

Boating on Naini Lake
The lake is the town, and the right way onto it is a wooden rowboat from the Mallital or Tallital boat stands — twenty minutes of green water with the whole amphitheatre of ridges turning around you. Early morning gives you glass; evening gives you colour.

Naina Devi Temple
The goddess who names the town, at the lake's northern shore — one of the shakti peethas, where Sati's eyes are said to have fallen. Rebuilt after the 1880 landslide that reshaped Mallital, it is the town's devotional anchor and busiest at first light.

Snow View Point by ropeway
The aerial ropeway from Mallital climbs to the ridge terrace that names itself: on a clear morning the high Himalaya stand along the horizon beyond the near hills. Haze builds with the day — this is a first-thing excursion or not at all.

Tiffin Top
The picnic ledge on Ayarpatta hill, earned by a forest walk or a pony from the Bara Patthar trailhead — oak and deodar most of the way, then the town and lake suddenly below you. The name is literal: carry the tiffin.

Mall Road
The lakeside promenade between Mallital and Tallital — candle shops, Kumaoni wool, the Boat House Club's gabled frontage and half the town out walking by evening. Parking on it is banned in season, which is fine: it was always meant for feet.
The itinerary, with Shoffr
Built around the real drive: 296 km — NH9 to Haldwani, then 35 km of ghat — six to seven hours including the 45–60 minute charging stop at Moradabad. In May, June and October the town bars incoming light vehicles from 18:00, so the whole day is planned to clear the ghat well before six. Two days and one night minimum.

Leave Delhi early
Not optional in peak months — the evening entry restriction makes this the most important departure time on any route we run. Moradabad's charging stop is breakfast.

Lunch at Haldwani, then the ghat
The foot of the hill is the last easy everything — after this it is 35 km of bends. You are up and checked in by mid-afternoon, hours inside the deadline.

A boat from the Tallital stand as the light goes gold, then Naina Devi as the lamps come on, and the evening surrendered to Mall Road.

First cars up get the Himalaya before the haze. Breakfast at the top if the terrace tempts you.

Walk or pony up from Bara Patthar — the chauffeur drops you at the trailhead. Down in time for a last Mall Road lunch.

Down the ghat and home
Leaving by two clears the hill in daylight; the Moradabad stop repeats on the way back and you are in Delhi by about 21:00. Kainchi Dham en route works on weekdays only — taxis are barred there at weekends.
Travel notes
- In May, June and October, be up the ghat before 18:00 or the town will hold the car out until 22:00 — this single rule sets the whole day's timing.
- Kainchi Dham, the most-requested stop on this road, refuses taxis on Saturdays and Sundays year-round — plan it for a weekday leg or take the shuttle from Bhowali.
- Tell us your hotel before you travel: Mall Road parking is banned in season and the town's lots fill on peak weekends, so where the car can actually stand varies property by property.
