There is one non-negotiable in Agra: see the Taj Mahal in the first light, before the crowds and the heat flatten it. Everything else — the fort that held the emperor who built it, the tomb that rehearsed it, the garden that faces it across the river — arranges itself around that dawn.
A pre-dawn start is exactly the kind of leg you don't want to drive yourself. Your chauffeur collects you in the dark, you sleep the expressway, and the car shadows you between the monuments all day.

Taj Mahal
At sunrise the marble goes from grey to rose to white inside an hour, and the crowds are a fraction of mid-morning's. Enter from the East Gate, and give it at least two hours.

Agra Fort
The red sandstone seat of three Mughal emperors, and the palace-prison from which Shah Jahan spent his last years looking at the Taj downriver. The marble courts inside are the surprise.

Itimad-ud-Daulah (the Baby Taj)
The jewel-box tomb that tried pietra dura inlay a decade before the Taj perfected it. Quiet, small and exquisite — most tours skip it, which is the argument for going.

Mehtab Bagh
The Mughal garden directly across the Yamuna from the Taj — the classic full-frontal view with the river in between, and the right place to be as the light goes soft.

Cross the river for Itimad-ud-Daulah while the tour buses are still at lunch. The car charges during your afternoon — the stop costs you nothing.

The farewell view. Leave by 18:00 and you are home in Delhi around 21:30.

Akbar's abandoned red sandstone capital is 40 km west of Agra — a half-day of courts and gates, and the strongest single argument for making Agra a two-day trip.
Travel notes
- The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. Check before you book the car.
- Large bags, tripods and food don't get past Taj security — leave everything in the car; that's what it's there for.
- Buy monument tickets online to skip one of the two queues at the gate.
