The Wayanad guide
Wayanad is the Kerala that sits on top of the Western Ghats instead of below them — a plateau of paddy, spice and tea with rainforest at its edges and Stone Age carvings in its rocks. The drive in is half the point: the road crosses the Bandipur and Muthanga reserves, where elephant sightings from the car are routine.
It is also a district without a centre. Sultan Bathery, Kalpetta and Vythiri anchor different corners, the sights are 20–40 km apart on plantation roads, and the forest crossing behind you closes at night. A car that stays with you turns all of that from arithmetic into a holiday.

Edakkal Caves
A cleft in Ambukutty hill sheltering petroglyphs thousands of years old — human figures, animals, symbols cut into the rock by people with no name left to us. The climb up from the base is steep and takes the better part of an hour; go in the morning before the queue forms on the ladders.

Banasura Sagar Dam
One of the largest earthen dams in India, holding back a reservoir scattered with green islands under the Banasura hills. Walk the crest for the view; boat rides run on the reservoir when the water allows.

Pookode Lake
A small freshwater lake ringed entirely by forest near Vythiri, with pedal boats and a walking path around the shore. Modest and lovely — the right hour of unwinding after a drive, not a destination in itself.

Chembra Peak
Wayanad's highest summit, climbed past the heart-shaped lake that launched a thousand photographs. The trek needs a forest department permit, issued in limited numbers for the day — this is a decide-before-you-come outing, and a full morning of real walking.

Soochipara Falls
A three-tiered fall dropping into a rock pool near Meppadi, reached by a short walk down from the road head through plantation. Strongest in and after the monsoon; the pool draws swimmers when the flow is gentle.
The itinerary, with Shoffr
Built around the real drive: 273 km and five and a half to six hours, with the 45–60 minute charging stop before Bandipur and every forest crossing kept inside the gate hours (the reserve road closes 21:00–06:00). Two days and one night.
Day 1 — the forest crossing and Edakkal

Leave Bangalore
Early, so the best part of the route — Bandipur and Muthanga back to back — happens in daylight. The charging stop before the forest is the coffee break.

Lunch at Sultan Bathery
The first Wayanad town, and the base for Edakkal. Kerala meals on banana leaves are the correct welcome.

Climb to the Edakkal Caves
Allow two to three hours for the walk up, the carvings and the view from the cleft. Real shoes; the last section is steep.

Check in
Most resorts sit well off the main road on plantation tracks — this is the daylight arrival the route notes keep insisting on. Evening is the veranda and the rain-smell.
Day 2 — water, hills and the daylight run home

Banasura Sagar
The dam crest walk with the islands below, boat ride optional. Trekkers with a Chembra permit spend the whole morning on the peak instead — pick one, not both.

An easy hour by the water on the Vythiri side, conveniently on the way to lunch.

Home through the gate
Leaving by 14:00 puts the Muthanga–Bandipur crossing well inside daylight and you in Bangalore by about 20:30, charged and done.
Travel notes
- Chembra needs a forest department permit issued in limited numbers — decide before you travel and settle the plan the evening you arrive, not on the morning.
- In and just after the monsoon, every trail has leeches. Salt, full shoes and tucked socks are the local answer, and it works.
- The Bandipur stretch is closed 21:00–06:00 with strict speed limits and no stopping — build the return around a 14:00 departure and the day stays easy.
