Coffee-country hills around Chikmagalur

Where Indian coffee began, 245 km from Bangalore

Chikmagalur is where coffee first took root in India — the legend says seven beans, smuggled from Yemen by the saint Baba Budan, planted on the hill that now bears his name. Four centuries later the district is still one big shade-grown estate, with Karnataka's highest peak rising straight out of it.

The town is only the base. Everything you come for — the summit roads, the falls, the estates, the Hoysala temples near Hassan — is scattered across steep single-lane country where a waiting car and a chauffeur who drives hills well is the difference between a trip and a logistics exercise.

Worth the trip

  • The grass slopes of Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka

    01

    Mullayanagiri

Karnataka's highest point at 1,930 metres, reached by a steep, narrow summit road and a final flight of stone steps to the little Shiva temple on top. Go early on a fresh morning — the road deserves an alert driver and the view deserves clear air.

  • The bare ridges of the Baba Budangiri range, Chikmagalur

    02

    Baba Budangiri

The ridge where those first seven beans were planted, holy to Sufis and Hindus alike — the cave shrine of Baba Budan and Dattatreya sits in the same rock. The drive along the range is bare, wind-blasted and spectacular.

    A coffee estate walk

Arabica and robusta under a high canopy of silver oak, pepper vines climbing the shade trees, cardamom in the wet folds. Most estate stays will walk you through the plot and brew what grew on it — in season you'll see picking and drying too.

    Hebbe Falls

A two-stage fall dropping through estate forest near Kemmangundi. The last stretch is a rough track that local 4x4 jeeps run — your car waits at the top, you come back soaked and pleased. Best from the monsoon into early winter.

  • The Hoysaleswara temple at Halebidu

    Belur and Halebidu

The twin peaks of Hoysala temple art, now UNESCO-listed — stone carved to the fineness of ivory, every band of the frieze telling a different story. They sit near Hassan, about 40 km off your route, and slot naturally into the drive in or out.

The itinerary, with Shoffr

Built around the real drive: 245 km, four and a half to five hours with the 45–60 minute charging stop at Shanthigrama just before Hassan. The hill roads are kept for a fresh morning, as they should be. Two days and one night.

Day 1 — Hoysala stone, then coffee country

  1. 7:00

    Leave Bangalore

NH75 is quick, four-lane running. The charging stop near Hassan around 10:00 is breakfast.

  2. 10:45

    Belur and Halebidu

Both temples off the Hassan turn, an hour or so at each. If carving isn't your thing, swap this for the Gomateshwara monolith at Shravanabelagola earlier on the route.

  3. 14:30

    Check in at the estate

Most stays are 15–40 km beyond town on single-lane estate roads — arriving in daylight matters. Drop the bags and take the estate walk before the light goes.

  4. 18:00

    Coffee, properly

A tasting of what grew around you, dinner at the homestay, and the kind of dark and quiet Bangalore has forgotten.

Day 2 — the peaks, then home

  1. 7:00

    Mullayanagiri on a fresh morning

The summit road is steep and single-lane — exactly why it's driven fresh, not tacked onto yesterday's five-hour run. Steps to the top, the state at your feet.

  2. 10:00

    Baba Budangiri or Hebbe Falls

Clear day: continue along the ridge to the cave shrine. Post-monsoon: the Hebbe jeep track is the better adventure. Either way, lunch back in town.

  3. 15:00

    The road home

Leaving by 15:00 puts you in Bangalore around 20:00, with the return charge at the same Shanthigrama stop.

Travel notes

  • Do the summit roads before 10:00 — mist builds over Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri through the morning, and the narrow roads are calmer early.
  • Hebbe Falls means a local jeep, wet rocks and half a day — wear shoes that can get wet and keep electronics in the car.
  • Estate nights are dark, cold and unlit. Share your homestay's exact pin when you book and plan to be in by dusk.
