Vijayawada is where the Krishna squeezes between its last hills before the delta, and everything worth seeing gathers at that pinch: the Kanaka Durga temple on Indrakeeladri above the river, the kilometre-long Prakasam Barrage below it, cave temples cut into the rock across the water, and the fort that gave Kondapalli's toymakers their village.
Most people come through on business — this is the busiest corridor we run out of Hyderabad — but the city rewards a proper visit. The sights sit on both banks and one of them is up a ghat road, so a car that stays with you turns a logistics problem into a simple loop.

Kanaka Durga Temple, Indrakeeladri
The goddess of the city, on a hill directly above the Krishna. Vehicles normally take the ghat road most of the way up; queues are shortest early in the morning, and the river view from the hill is the city's best.

Prakasam Barrage
The 1.2 km barrage that turned the delta green, carrying the road across the Krishna with Indrakeeladri rising behind it. Best seen from the Tadepalli bank at first or last light, when the fishing boats are out.

Undavalli Caves
A four-storey cave temple cut into the hillside across the river, its upper hall holding a monumental reclining Vishnu. The floors are linked by rock-cut steps and terraces with delta views — a short drive from town and easily the most underrated hour in Vijayawada.

Kondapalli Fort
A hill fort west of the city whose village below carves the famous painted softwood toys. The fort's walls and gateways ramble over the ridge; the workshops at its foot are where the real souvenirs come from.

The itinerary, with Shoffr
Built around the real drive: 275 km on NH65, five to five and a half hours with the 45–60 minute charging stop at Narketpally. Doable as a long day for one thing; two days and a night does the city justice.
Day 1 — down NH65, then the far bank

Out via the ORR Pedda Amberpet exit ahead of the Choutuppal crawl. The Narketpally charging stop is breakfast.

The city does a proper Andhra meal — come hungry, leave humbled by the gongura.

Early is everything here — the queue at opening is a fraction of mid-morning's. The car takes the ghat road; we confirm the current access arrangement before you travel.

A short drive west. Ramble the walls, then buy the painted toys from the workshops that actually make them.

Leaving by 14:30 puts you back in Hyderabad around 20:30 with the charging stop at Narketpally.
Travel notes
- Access up Indrakeeladri has been affected by repair works in the past — we check the current arrangement for the ghat road before you travel.
- Undavalli's floors are linked by rock-cut steps worn smooth by centuries. Wear real shoes, not sandals.
- If your dates brush Dasara, decide which Vijayawada you want: the festival is unforgettable and the queues are measured in hours.
