Charging on the Bangalore to Ooty route
We leave Bangalore at 100% and plan one charging stop of about an hour before the climb. The Gundlupet charger closes at 20:30, so on a late departure we charge earlier at Srirangapatna on the Mysore expressway instead. The Nilgiris has very little fast charging, so we always go up the ghat with enough range to come back down.

What to know about this drive
- NH766 through Bandipur is closed to all vehicles between 21:00 and 06:00. If you are not through the gate by nightfall, the detour via Gundlupet, Mananthavady and Gonikoppal adds hours. We plan departures to clear Bandipur well before the cut-off.
- There are two ways to Ooty: via Mysore and Bandipur, or via Chamarajanagar and Sathyamangalam. We use the Bandipur road by default — it is shorter and better surfaced. The Sathyamangalam road has 27 hairpins of its own and is the fallback when the gate is a problem.
- The final stretch from Gudalur to Ooty is 36 hairpin bends. It is slow by design, and if anyone in the car is prone to motion sickness this is the hour to be ready for it.
Places to stop between Bangalore and Ooty
- Srirangapatna: Tipu Sultan's island fort and summer palace, just off the Mysore expressway.
- Gundlupet: Marigold and sunflower fields either side of the highway when they are in bloom.
- Bandipur Tiger Reserve: The drive itself is the sighting — elephants and deer are common at the roadside. No stopping inside the reserve.
- Gudalur: The last town before the hairpins, and the usual tea stop before the climb.

How much time does it take from Bangalore to Ooty by car?
Six to seven hours of driving for 270 km, plus a charging stop of about an hour. The average speed is low because of the Bandipur reserve limits and the 36 hairpins after Gudalur.
Is Bangalore to Ooty better via Mysore or via Chamarajanagar?
Via Mysore and Bandipur is shorter and the road is better, so it is our default. The Chamarajanagar and Sathyamangalam route is useful if the Bandipur night gate is in the way, but it has 27 hairpins of its own and takes longer.
Can I stop at Mysore on the way to Ooty?
Yes. Mysore is directly on the route and a Palace or Chamundi Hills stop fits naturally into the drive. Mention it when you book so the day is planned with the Bandipur gate timing in mind.
Can I book a cab for Ooty sightseeing after the drop?

Is the car air-conditioned on the ghat?
Yes, throughout. Ooty is cold enough that most guests want the heating rather than the cooling by the time they arrive.

What happens if the charging station is not working?
Every planned stop has at least one named alternative within reach, and our operations team checks charger status on the morning of departure. Charger downtime is a real problem on Indian highways, which is why we plan for it rather than hope.
Does the charging stop make the trip longer?
We budget a full hour for a charging stop, and we schedule it where you would want a break anyway - somewhere with a clean restroom and food. Often it takes less, but we plan the day on an hour so a busy charger does not put you behind schedule.
